Advanced Computer Applications

By Leah Folk

March 26, 2025

Before students departed for Spring break, Ursuline’s Advanced Computer Applications and Coding II classes went to Maryville University to attend their Cyberspark Cybersecurity event.

Nearly 150 high-schoolers participated, having the opportunity to tour the campus, learn more about the Cybersecurity department at Maryville, and learn skills related to computer security and potential career paths.

The event also allowed students to compete in Capture the Flag, a popular cybersecurity challenge in which participants attempt to find text strings, called "flags", which are secretly hidden in purposefully vulnerable programs/websites.

Real-world applications, like the Cyberspark event, go hand in hand with the objectives of these two classes, as well as support our students in their career exploration. Both Advanced Computer Applications and Coding II are hands-on, project-based courses that allow students the opportunity to continue building upon their essential skills of communication and critical thinking. They both develop students’ knowledge and skill set of computer applications, which can then be applied to their personal, professional, and academic lives, regardless of which career path they choose. We are proud to see our students trying new things, exploring their interests, and taking advantage of the opportunities available to them at UA.
