Ursuline Academy commits to educating global leaders focusing on the Ursuline mission which includes educating students for Christian living and leadership in a global society. By offering many unique opportunities to engage with people, ideas, and issues beyond the borders of our country, we foster a deep sense of social consciousness which instills greater levels of confidence, empathy, and humility in each of our students.
In alignment with this objective, Lisa Payne our Art Teacher and Global Education Coordinator and Katie Kempf our Alumnae Relations Coordinator, worked together to bring Sammy Zuehlke ’13 in virtually to discuss her experience living and working in Saudi Arabia.
After graduating as the Salutatorian from Ursuline Academy in 2013, Sammy attended the University of Kansas to study mechanical engineering. In 2017, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and shortly after moved to Texas to begin working for Chevron Philips Chemical Company, one of the world’s top producers of olefins and polyolefins. After working there for five years, in September of 2022, she had the opportunity to become one of the first female engineers from Chevron Philips Chemical to travel to Saudi Arabia and work as a Process Engineer supporting ethylene unit turnaround, equipment inspections, and general TA support.
During a virtual conversation with the Ursuline student body, Sammy discussed her career thus far, how she got to her current position and shared her experience of working in a male-dominated field and living abroad. We were so grateful to be able to share this experience and global connection with our current students, and learn more about Saudi Arabia and what it means to be a global citizen.
