Varsity Basketball – District Champions

By Leah Folk

March 25, 2021

On Friday, March 5, the Ursuline Varsity Basketball team defeated the Rockwood Summit High School team 48-38 to claim the District Championship title. This exciting win comes as the second time in Ursuline’s basketball career, the last time being won in 1987.

The  District game was held at Ursuline, and while still following social distancing and mask-wearing, some students and spectators were able to cheer on their Bears to this historic win. The atmosphere in the gym was pure spirit, as the final buzzer rang, and friends and family erupted in celebration, especially after how this season had started out for the Bears. At the start of their season and practices, the team was put on quarantine for four weeks, not allowing them to start playing until nearly a month after other teams were able to begin.

“It’s been really crazy,” senior Hannah Scherzinger ’21 said when asked about their historic win. “It’s amazing to experience it with this great group of girls. I walked into class (Monday) to people cheering. All the teachers knew. It was such a cool day.”

From there, the Varsity went on to play Union High School at Union for the Sectionals title. While they were unable to take home that next title, several other great recognitions came out of the finished season for members of the team. Hannah Scherzinger ’21 was recognized as the Player of the Year in Class 5, District 3 for Basketball, as well as being named on the All-District Team, along with Addie Rhea ’23. Our varsity basketball coach, Jeff Stevens, reached his 200th high school victory and went on to be named Coach of the Year in Class 5, District 3 for Basketball. It truly was a great season all around, and we are so proud of all those involved.
